Course description

This subject offers you the opportunity to study the world around them, engaging in topics which influence your everyday life. Sociology is an excellent choice to partner a number of other A-Levels but also stands alone as a credible and popular subject to be taken at university.

Course content

First year:

  • Education with research methods
  • Topics will include families and households

Second year:

  • Crime and deviance with theory and research methods
  • Topics will include choice of beliefs in society or mass media

Entry requirements

 3 GCSE grades B/5s and 3 GCSE grades C./4s


Assessment is by written examinations

Financial information

All full-time courses are free to 16-18 year olds who are an EU citizen.

Future opportunities

A Level in sociology allows you to progress to Higher Education for degree courses in a wide range of related fields. Alternatively, the course gives access to numerous career paths, particularly those involving working with people i.e. management, social work, teaching, the leisure industry, nursing, civil service, law, the police, journalism and advertising. More than anything else, sociology students develop critical and analytical skills, which can be of great value to them in both interpersonal relationships and organisational situations.
