English Language IGCSE (Distance Learning) at National Extension College *Fees Payable*

Course description



English language is a fascinating and compelling subject to study, and this distance learning IGCSE will teach you all about how language is used and how it can be adapted for different purposes. Covering topics including text analysis, the different purposes of writing, grammar, spelling and punctuation, this home study course will improve your literacy, communication skills and the quality of your writing. The essay-writing skills you develop studying English language will prove invaluable in many other subjects, and obtaining a grade C or better will open up a huge number of jobs and qualifications for which a pass at GCSE level is a basic requirement. If you want to get into a career in teaching, midwifery or nursing, as well as countless others, this is an essential qualification. 


You should allow for between 120 and 150 hours' study time, plus additional time for completing assignments. You will have tutor support for a period of up to 18 months from the date of enrolment.

Unit 1: Personal writing: fiction
Unit 2: Personal writing: non-fiction
Unit 3: Reading non-fiction texts
Unit 4: Writing to argue, persuade and advise
Unit 5: The Edexcel Anthology

You should have a good command of basic English.


This course follows specification 4EA0 from the awarding organisation Edexcel. Full details of the specification can be obtained from Edexcel's website.
