Course description

You will study units from the list below which relate to your job role. You will also study: • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Booklet • Level 2 functional skills in English and maths • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) Units • Analysing technical information, quantities and communication with others • Analysing the construction industry and built environment • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries • Manufacture shaped joinery products • Set and mark out for shaped joinery products • Set up and operate woodworking machinery to create curved work English and Maths English and maths qualifications are a requirement for most jobs and it is important that you are able to demonstrate your ability in these areas. If you do not already have a grade C or above in GCSE English and maths you will automatically undertake further study in these subjects as part of your study programme.

•Apply coatings by brush and roller

•Apply wall coverings to ceilings and walls

•Apply water-borne paint systems using airless equipment

•Carry out specialist architectural feature work

•Erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms

•Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries

•Prepare surfaces for protection and decoration

•Produce advanced decorative finishes

•Understanding construction technology

•Understanding information, quantities and communication with others

Entry requirements


Successful completion of  Level 2 Apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating

plus Employed or written offer of employment in construction

plus Successful construction skills assessment




You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in College and in your place of work.

Future opportunities

Employment - This course can form the foundations for future work as a Painter and Decorator.

Education - You could continue with higher level qualifications. The management element of the course allows successful learners to progress onto a management qualification
