Applied ICT AS/A-Level at Greig City Academy

Course description

This is a modern and relevant course. It is ideal for those wishing to study ICT but wanting to go into other careers. Its subject matter is wide ranging and the skills learnt are applicable to higher education.

 

Course content

In year 12, the AS year, students must complete two pieces of assessed coursework which are presented in an e-portfolio and they take a 2½ hour exam on the computers.

In Year 13, the A2 year, students must complete a further two pieces of assessed coursework which are presented in an e-portfolio and they take a 10 hour database exam on the computers

Entry requirements

Most students will have successfully completed a GCSE level course in ICT. Good passes in Mathematics and English are an advantage.

Assessment

The course is assessed by four coursework submissions (two for A2 and four for AS). Additionally there is one examined unit at AS level and one externally set and marked assignment for A2.

There is a mixture of: theory, discussions, a large amount self directed research, and practical skills lessons to deal with completing electronic portfolios and software specific topics.

Future opportunities

All go on to university to study courses such as: architecture, engineering, computer enhanced film and animation, computer science, web design, graphics, systems analysis, database management, accounting, fashion, software development.
