English Language A-Level at Tavistock Community College
The first year of this course is an AS level qualification and consists of 2 units of study. The student may continue to study for a second year in order to gain an A2 qualification. English Language encourages students to develop their interest in and enjoyment of English, through learning about its structures and its variations. It allows students to develop their ability to express themselves in both speech and writing with increasing competence and sophistication; to encounter a varied range of reading and to develop their skills of critical and attentive listening. Ultimately, the course will allow the avid student to develop a better appreciation of their versatile and colourful ‘Mother Tongue’. Ultimately the student of English Language will become a better judge of ‘good’ English and a skilled communicator. The units studied at AS level are: • Unit 1 – Categorising Texts - introduction to the study of language, focusing on three specific social contexts: Language and Power, Language and Gender, and Language and Technology. • Unit 2 - Creating Texts – students produce writing in different genres and for different audiences and purposes (2500-3500 words). The units studied at A2 are: • Unit 3 – Developing Language - builds on AS knowledge and skills, with an additional focus on two new areas of language study: Child Language Acquisition and Language Change. • Unit 4 - Investigating Language - students produce two pieces: a language investigation and an informative media text (2500-3000 words)
5 A* - C grades including a B grade in the chosen (or appropriate alternative) subject.
Unit 1 and 3 are examinations (60%); Unit 2 and 4 are coursework (40%)
This subject supports university study or employment in fields such as journalism, social sciences, law etc.
