A-Level (AS/A2) in Physics at Archbishop Holgate's School

Course description

If you enjoy a challenge you will enjoy Physics. It gives you the opportunity to develop logical problem solving skills, carry out practical work, and apply your knowledge to the real world. We aim to make the challenge of Physics as enjoyable as possible through a variety of teaching and learning styles developed through our many years of teaching experience. Physics students are prized by industry and universities for the varied skills they have acquired.  If you study this course we would advise that students should attain at least a B in Science plus a B in Mathematics in order to succeed.

 

Course content

The topics you will study include mechanics, electricity, waves, particle physics, nuclear structure and radioactivity plus many others. There is a choice of topics during the second year including medical physics and astrophysics.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for Sixth Form are 5 A*- C at GCSE, including English and Mathematics, although certain courses will have specific requirements.

You need to be prepared for hard work and have strong mathematical skills.

 

 

Assessment

20% of the AS and A-Level courses are assessed by coursework. The rest of the assessment is by exam paper; two modules in the AS year and a further two in the A2 year.

Financial information

Over the duration of this course students may be required to attend visits to further their learning. If there are any cost implications student will be notified in advance and financial support may be offered to students who would have difficulty funding such visits.

Future opportunities

Most of our students progress to university, taking degrees in scientific subjects or engineering. Many study in areas of finance, business and IT.
