Level 3 General or Software Development BTEC Extended Diploma

This course will enable you to pursue a career in Computing or progress to a top-up course to gain an Extended Diploma and then go on to higher-level study (such as the Foundation Degree in Computer Science) or university.

There are two streams within this qualification:

General: This option provides you with the widest possible spread of modules, giving you a broad base of knowledge within all areas of the ICT industry. This is intended to maximise your opportunities for progression to Higher Education, particularly on Computer Science courses such as our Foundation Degree but also on to University courses. It also provides you with a broad base of experience to improve your opportunities to progress into employment.

Software Development: This option will enable you to undertake a career within database administration, web design or software application development.

There are specialist modules that allow you to focus on an area of particular interest, such as server side scripting, database design and development and Java programming. This option is particularly suited to anyone interested in the creation of software, including mobile application development.

You must be under the age of 19 years when the course begins. 

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade C or above including English and Maths or successful completion of a Level 2 programme including English and Maths at Level 2. You must also be under the age of 19 years when the course begins.


You will be continually assessed throughout the programme.
