Course outline for students studying the full A-level - split into 6 modules;

Module 1 - Development of practical skills in Chemistry

Module 2 Foundations in Chemistry

Module 3 Periodic Table and Energy

Module 4 Core Organic Chemistry

Module 5  Physical Chemistry & Transition Element

Module 6 Organic Chemistry & Analysis

 

 

Course content

 

The A-level course is split into six modules:

Module1 – Development of practical skills in Chemistry;

Module 2 – Foundations in Chemistry,

Module 3 – Periodic Table and Energy,

Module 4 – Core Organic Chemistry,

Module 5 – Physical Chemistry and Transition Elements,

Module 6 – Organic Chemistry and Analysis.

Entry requirements

GCSE Additional Science grade 5/6 or Chemistry Grade 5/6 & Maths Grade 5/6

 

Assessment

Assessment: There are 3 exams at the end of Year 13

1) Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry 2hr15m written examination, content assessed Modules 1,2,3,5 37% of A level

2) Synthetis & Analytical Techniques 2hrs 15m written examination, content assessed Modules 1,2,4,6 35% of A level

3) Unified Chemistry (synoptic paper) 1hr 30m written examination, content assessed all modules 26% of A level

Students will perform a minimum of 12 required practical activities over the 2 year course and will receive a practical endorsement in chemistry which does not count towards the A-level grade and is reported separately as PASS/FAIL

Higher Eductional Progression

A level Chemistry is essential for Chemistry, Medical, Vetinary and Dentristry degrees. It is useful for all Science degrees and many other subjects and it is rated highly by top universities - a 'high currency' A level
