Course description

What will I study?

This course gives you an insight into what it takes to become an entrepreneur. It will provide you with an essential understanding of starting and running your own small business at AS and builds a deeper understanding of larger business at A2. The course covers the internal functions of businesses, the external environment and major topical issues that can affect a business, from the point of view of various stakeholders.

The focus of the first unit is on starting and financing a business in the context of a Business Plan. It covers issues such as research, planning and factors to determine success. In unit 2 you will focus on how an established business might improve its effectiveness through tactical decision making. You will learn how to interpret data and how to identify actions to improve performance.

At A2 you will examine a variety of topic areas in relation to setting objectives, measuring performance and devising strategies. You will consider the relationship between business and external factors as well as examining how external factors can impact upon a business, and the responses they may take. At A2 you will also examine a number of themes which are important to the strategic management of the business, for example, leadership, culture and managing change.

How will I be assessed?

AS Year:

Unit 1: 1 hour 15 mins, 40% of AS, 20% of A Level. Short Answer Questions and extended responses based on a case study.

Unit 2: 1 hour 30 mins, 60% of AS, 30% of A Level. Compulsory, multi-part data response questions.

A2 Year:

Unit 3: 1 hour 45 mins, 25% of A Level. Questions require extended answers based on an unseen case study drawing upon knowledge from AS units.

Unit 4: 1 hour 45 mins, 25% of A Level

Pre-release research tasks leading to the first section of a two section examination. Second section will consist of a choice of Essays. All Questions will be essay style and synoptic therefore drawing upon knowledge from all units.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at A* - C or equivalent including Maths & English.
