Art and Design BTEC level 2 single award at Frome Community College

Course description

You will study four units:

Unit 1

Specialist pathways in Art and Design This project introduces the basics in art, photography and graphics. You will try out a range of techniques and get experience of a mini project in each specialism.

Unit 2

Creative project in art and design This is an externally set exam. You select a theme for your exam project from the exam paper. This could be an art, graphics or photography project. You research your project for a number of weeks and make a final piece in a five-hour exam.

Unit 3

Communicating ideas in 2D media

In this project you will focus on drawing, painting and screen printing. Developing your own designs to a brief and studying the work of relevant artists.

Unit 5

Developing an art and design portfolio In this project you will study how other artists and designers present and market their work. You will make your own digital and ‘real’ portfolio and present it to your group. You will also prepare for job/college interviews and consider the options available to you on completion of the course.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE passes at grade G or above, including maths and English language.

Assessment

These qualifications now include external examinations and internally assessed work. The exam board specifies very strict rules for internal assessment. Students are expected to meet specific deadlines in order to be successful on these courses.

Future opportunities

The Level 2 ‘GCSE Plus’ Foundation Year Programme has been successfully running for a number of years and has grown considerably in the past 2 years.

Many students, having completed this year, continue at Frome Sixth Form for another two years to complete Level 3 subjects. The government funds students for three years of sixth form study and it is the expectation that all students remain in education, training or employment until the end of the academic year in which they turn 18.
