Design Technology: Textiles - As and A2 at Downend School

Course description

A-level Product Design Textiles promotes a broad view of design & technology with a specific focus on Textiles. The course will help you to develop the skills & capacity to design and make products as well as appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing in the textile industry, including fashion and wider textile applications. This course is an ideal opportunity to further develop your creativity and practical skills within the sphere of textiles. You will design and make a range of fashion based products – including accessories, corsets and clothing. If you are interested in design, textiles and fashion: are creative and enjoy learning new practical skills – this would be an ideal course for you.


Unit 1 - based primarily on Materials and Components, Design and Market Influences.

Unit 2 - Coursework takes the form of a portfolio of work made up from a number of smaller projects.


The year allows a more in depth study of the three areas of Materials and Components, Design and Market Influences, Processes and Manufacture coupled with the opportunity to undertake a single, substantial designing and making activity.

Unit 3 – Coursework – a single detailed design and make project

Unit 4 – Exam – this is a synoptic paper, and covers all areas of the syllabus

This course would work as an excellent combination with disciplines such as Art, Photography, and Science.

Entry requirements

It is helpful but not essential for students to have studied a GCSE Design and Technology before starting this course.

AS: Grade B in GCSE Design Technology

A2: Grade D in AS Design Technology - Textiles
