English Language A Level at Queen Elizabeth High School

Course description

This is a new specification A Level. The course is studied over two years with exams held at the end of the two years. This exciting course encourages you to develop your interest in, and enjoyment of, the use and study of English through learning about its structures, functions, development and variations. It will allow you to develop your skills as a writer, a producer and interpreter of language, engage creativity and pursue independent investigative work as well as developing your ability to analyse texts.

- Children’s Language Development
- Language Diversity and Change
- Language Discourses
- Writing skills
- Language Investigation
- Original Writing

Assessment

You will explore writing and speech in a wide range of forms and learn how to analyse all aspects of language, applying the frameworks for language study. Assessment is a combination of coursework and examination. Two pieces of coursework are submitted; one being a piece of fiction or non-fiction writing with analysis, and one an investigation into an area of language of the student’s choice.

Future opportunities

Having A Level English Language is a good foundation for a variety of degrees and careers. Students who have taken English have chosen to study linguistics, broadcast or print journalism, teaching and law at university. Even if you don’t want to continue to degree level in the subject, it provides evidence that you have advanced skills in communication and can write well, something that is a prerequisite for most degree courses. English is particularly good preparation for careers in the media, advertising and publishing as it demonstrates that you are both creative and analytical.
