Performing Arts Advanced Extended Diploma at Derby College

Course description

This highly practical course is based on current practice within the performing arts sector.  Study at this level will ensure that you gain the abilities you need to succeed in what is a fulfilling and challenging industry.

If you do not have GCSE Maths at grade A*-C, you will also develop your skills in maths.  This will support your main programme of study, future progression and life skills.

Course content

You will study:

  • Historical Context of Performance
  • Rehearsing for Performance
  • Devising Plays
  • Theatre in Education
  • Musical Theatre Performance
  • Dance Performance
  • Choreographic Principles
  • Special Subject Investigation
  • Maths (if necessary)

Entry requirements

You will need to have passed the BTEC Level 3 90-credit Diploma, with a minimum grade of Merit Pass to progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma.


Your knowledge and understanding of the industry, along with your skills development, will be assessed through a variety of practical and theory-based assignments.  You will also plan, devise and manage your own Theatre in Education production at the end of the year.

Learners studying maths will be assessed through controlled assessments or a final exam.

Future opportunities

The BTEC Extended Diploma reflects current industry practice.  Upon completion of the course, learners will be well prepared for employment or a variety of performing arts-based courses within higher education.
