Course description

Have you ever wondered what capitalism is?

Why politicians argue as to whether the UK should stay within the EU? WHy some people earn so much and others earn so little? As a social science which combines maths and statistics with sciences and the humanities. Economics is a subject which explores the factors that influence these issues and many more.

Course content

You will investigate the operation of markets and market failure including economic methodology and issues arising from limited resources. You will understand how price is determined in a competitive market and will explore the impact of production on costs and revenue. You will examine the market mechanism, market failure and Government intervention in markets. You will then study the national economy within a global context.


A Level Economics will be assess by written exams at the end of the course. There is no coursework.

Future opportunities

A Level Economics will lead to further study in a range of subject at degree level due to the analytical nature of the subject. It is a highly regarded qualification. Career paths can invlude jobs in business, finance, management consultancy, politics and the public sector.
