Chemistry A-Level at WALSALL ACADEMY

Course description

The Science courses offered at Walsall Academy are designed to provide academic and vocational experiences. They will prepare students for their choice of career in both the world of work and Higher Education.

We expect all students to demonstrate a high level of motivation and have the capacity for hard work. Sixth Form work is demanding and students are expected to take increased responsibility for their own learning through supported self-study courses. Excellent attendance is vital if students are to benefit from the courses.

Course content

There are opportunities to become a STEM ambassador. We have many visiting speakers including ex-students advising on apprenticeship opportunities. UKCAT preparation sessions are organised for those interested in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Sciences. University led careers workshops are provided each year. Session 3 exam preparation is offered for all students. Career focussed work placements are available on a regular basis or in a two week block.

Module 2 – Foundations in Chemistry

Module 3 – Periodic Table and Energy

Module 4 – Core Organic Chemistry

Module 5 – Physical Chemistry and Transition Elements

Module 6 – Organic Chemistry and Analysis

The practical qualification is either a pass or fail based upon 12 in class assessments and will be provided separate to the overall exam grade

 

 

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs (grades A*-C) or equivalent including English and Mathematics

Grade B in GCSE Science (higher tier) and Additional Science (higher tier) or Grade B in GCSE Chemistry

Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics

Students must satisfactorily pass their AS Chemistry to at least grade D to be allowed to continue to full A level in Year 13.

Future opportunities

The opportunities for students of Chemistry on completion of full time education are vast. There are many possible careers within the scientific world and qualifications in Science subjects are acceptable as an entry in many other careers.

Past students have left the course to follow these career paths: Medicine, Dentistry, Forensic Science, Pharmacy, Medical Science, Chemical Engineering, Research Chemistry, Nursing, Oil and Petroleum Science, Apprenticeships with Jaguar Land Rover, Environmental Chemistry and Waste Management.
