Public Services Diploma Level 1 at Canterbury College Not
This course is ideal for people wishing to progress onto a Level 2 study programme with aspirations to join a Public Service in the future. The course is a combination of academic, physical and outdoor sessions that will give you an insight into what's required to work in the Public Services. You will meet public Service professionals, visit external agencies and have the opportunities for residential trips with the military.
Being in Public Services is more than just a job, it requires a different ethos, culture and commitment, so from day one, these themes will be used to educate and prepare you for work in the Public Services. You will be expected to wear uniform every day, in line with many Public Services and conduct yourself in a manner befitting a Public servant. This will include; respect, teamwork and discipline.
During your one-year programme you will have the opportunity to research and learn about a selection of integral units including; Teamwork and Leadership, Land Navigation, Sport and Fitness, Public Service Skills and many others, totalling eleven units over the year. You will also gain skills in teamwork, communication, leadership, fitness, resilience, honesty, enthusiasm, commitment, discipline, respect as well as improving confidence.
If you start the course without GCSE C or above in Mathematics and/or English Language, you will have to complete a Maths and/or English qualification as part of your Study Programme. This will consist of up to three hours of classes for each subject per week.
You must have 3 x GCSEs E and above (including Maths & English Language) however experience and other attributes will be considered for this course. All applicants must successfully pass the department assessment centre.
Through a combination of practical work, presentations and a portfolio of assignments, case studies and tests. Because this course requires something different from you, we run a two day assessment centre that all applicants must attend. The assessment centre will aim to test your suitability for a Public Services course and give you an insight into the life of a Public Services student, because not all people are suitable for this profession.
We will be looking at your academic capabilities, teamwork & leadership skills and general qualities against those of the Public Services. The two days will involve the following:
- taster sessions (pen & paper required)
- leadership and Teamwork tasks Academic assessments including a homework task
- physical training (Day 2 - PE kit required, as well as any medical support i.e. inhaler or medical note)
- an individual debrief (discussing your performance over the two days and your suitability for the course)
This course will support in applying for a Level 2 study programme or support you with progressing into a career across a range of public services including the armed forces, fire service, prison service, ambulance service, border force, police, customs & excise and non-uniformed public services.
As part of the study programme all students will have to complete a minimum (normally 30) number of work experience hours which students will be supported in finding a relevant placement. All students will also have the opportunity to listen to external speakers and visit Public Service establishments and take part in residential trips with the Military.
As this course requires something different from you, we run a two-day assessment centre that all applicants must attend. The assessment centre will aim to test your suitability for a Public Services course and give you an insight into the life of a Public Service student. We do this because not all people are suitable for this profession. We will be looking at your academic capabilities, teamwork & leadership skills and general qualities against those of the Public Services. After successfully passing the assessment centre and gaining the necessary qualifications, you will be invited to enrol.
The requirements of attending the course are as follows:
- Uniform (list of uniform will be provided at enrolment)
- Trips fund - £TBC (to be paid within first two weeks of course)
