Politics Level 3 - AS Level/A Level at Exeter College

Course description

The syllabus requires that you cover the main political institutions and processes as they apply to the UK.

Study activities will include discussions, lectures, worksheets, guided private study, essay writing, small group work

Course content

The areas covered in the first year AS Level course are:

  • Democracy, elections and pressure groups
  • Parliament, the Prime Minister and the cabinet
  • The constitution and constitutional change
  • The judiciary and civil liberties

In year two, you will study 'political ideologies'. Political ideologies will include:

  • Liberalism, conservatism, socialism, anarchism
  • Nationalism, feminism, ecologism, multiculturalism

Entry requirements

You need at least five GCSEs at grade C or above (including maths), with English language at grade B or above.

Assessment

There will be a minimum of four assessed pieces of work per term. You are also expected to use some private study time for reading around the subject. There is no course work component in the AS or A2 courses and assessment will be on the basis of an exam at the end of each unit.

Future opportunities

A level Politics provides good training in analytical and essay-writing skills and is thus useful to gain entry to University courses as well as occupations which require a level of social awareness.
