Sport (BTEC First Diploma) offered as part of a full time Level 3 programme (optional V.A.L.P. component) at Sandown Bay Academy
What is a First Diploma? This is a work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. How does this compare to a GCSE Qualification? A BTEC First Diploma is an accredited Level 2 qualification that is equivalent to four GCSE grades A*-C. It prepares students for careers in the sports sector via applied learning and assessment. This qualification is recognised by employers and educational institutions, and provides a good progression route to more advanced qualifications, for example the BTEC Nationals. How will I be assessed? Be under no illusion – this is not an easy option and students are required to submit approximately 10 pieces of coursework per year. All units (subjects) are assessed through coursework assignments. There are NO EXAMS, but it means that students will have coursework throughout the duration of the course. This requires a high level of commitment and motivation.
A strong commitment to sport and school life. A satisfactory level of attendance (at least 90%). A satisfactory standard of literacy and numeracy, which will enable students to research extensively and complete pieces of comprehensive assignment work.
POSSIBLE PROGRESSION: With further training or study, students can go into careers in: Sports Centres Leisure Centres Outdoor Activity Centres However, not only does it prepare students for employment, it also provides a good grounding to go on to a more advanced course such as: BTEC National Diplomas (with Sport and Exercise Sciences offered in the sixth form at Sandown High School).
