Course description

For students who want to keep their options open, Classical Civilisation is the perfect subject.

With elements of Literature, History, Drama, Politics, Philosophy, Law and Sociology, you will gain a key understanding of the classical world and beyond.

There is a visit to Newcastle University for a series of lectures on various topics from their Classics department. Classical Civilisation offers all kinds of academic insights into the past. With strong elements of Literature and History, it is an ideal complement for students of these subjects. However, there are also elements of Philosophy, Politics, Law and even Art, making this a subject that can really enhance your understanding of many areas of interest.

Course content

AS - Unit 1: A literature study of Homer's 'The Odyssey'. Unit 2: The lives of women in Athens and Rome.

A Level – Your A Level studies consolidate your understanding of Epic through Virgil's 'Aeneid' as well as the role of myth and legend in the lives of ancient people through the reading of Greek tragedy.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs Grade A* to C, including English Language at Grade B and English Literature at Grade C.

Assessment

AS/A Level - Two written exams.

Future opportunities

Higher Education – Classics, History or Literature-related Degrees. Careers include: Archaeology, Journalism, working in the media, Historian and Teaching.
