Drama & Theatre Studies at St Martin's School Brentwood
This course demands practical, creative and communication skills this extends the ability to create drama and theatre, either in a performing or production role. Practical performance, written work and the study of plays and playwrights develop powers of analysis and criticism.
The first module, Exploration of Drama and Theatre, explores two contrasting play texts in a practical and active way. At least one of the plays must be explored in the light of a recognised theatre practitioner with individual research and response to the practical work produced. The module also involves the evaluation of a live theatre performance.
The second module, Theatre Text in Performance, develops performance skills through the production of a published play and a monologue or duologue. The performance may be approached through acting or design.
The second year of the course begins with; Exploration of Dramatic Performance. This module requires the creation of an original and unique piece of theatre based upon research and development from an identified stimulus and the evaluation of both the process and performance.
Undertaken along side the performance aspect of the course, the final module, Theatre Text in Context, analyses set texts from the point of view of a director and studies a period of theatrical history. A live performance of a play from the chosen period must be experienced and evaluated and a comparison made with the original staging conditions of the play.
