Chemistry A Level at Ysgol Y Strade

Course description

The specification is one that provides a thorough understanding of fundamental concepts , along with a broad and balanced coverage of a range of chemical topics. There is an opportunity to develop several skills, which are transferable to many career options.

Course content

Unit 1: Physical chemistry.

Unit 2: Physical, inorganic and organic chemistry.

Unit 3: Practical assessment.

Unit 4: Spectroscopy & further organic chemistry.

Unit 5: Further physical & inorganic chemistry.

Unit 6: Practical assessment.

Entry requirements

Although each student will be considered on an individual basis for entry onto the course it would be beneficial to have at least a B grade in science and additional Science Higher Tier.

Assessment

Unit 1: Examination 1hr 30min

Unit 2: Examination 1hr 30min

Unit 3: Examination 6 hours

Unit 4: Examination 1hr 45min

Unit 5: Examination 1hr 45min

Unit 6: Examination 6 hours

Future opportunities

Chemistry can be studied successfully with a number of other A level subjects and it is accepted as a subject for several Higher Education courses, including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and Physiotherapy. It is also useful in supporting other courses, including Geography and Physics.
