This qualification is a combination of 3 examined units and 5 coursework based units each unit will be awarded on a pass/merit/distinction basis

Course content

The four year 12 units are:1 Principles and Applications of Science I – EXAM2 Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques – COURSEWORK3 Science Investigation Skills – EXAM4 Laboratory Techniques and their Application - COURSEWORKThe four year 13 units are:5 Principles and Applications of Science II – EXAM6 Investigative Project - COURSEWORKAnd two of the following units to be decided by Roundhay High School:8 Physiology of Human Body Systems – COURSEWORK9 Human Regulation and Reproduction – COURSEWORK10 Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways – COURSEWORK11 Genetics and Genetic Engineering – COURSEWORK12 Diseases and Infections – COURSEWORK13 Applications of Inorganic Chemistry – COURSEWORK14 Applications of Organic Chemistry – COURSEWORK15 Electrical Circuits and their Application – COURSEWORK16 Astronomy and Space Science – COURSEWORK

Entry requirements

General entry requirement

Students should achieve GCSE grade 5 in English Language and Mathematics plus 3 further GCSE grades 9-4 (or grade C in non-reformed qualifications) AND meet the individual subject specific requirements.

Assessment

Units 2,4,6 and the optional two units from year 13 are internally marked. Units 1,3 and 5 are externally marked examination assessments

Future opportunities

It allows students a base to progress to a degree or Higher Education studies in applied biology sports science, or other Applied Sciences or alternatively to enter a career as a science technician in many areas.The BTEC qualifications are designed to provide highly specialist, work-related qualifications in a range of vocational sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment. The qualifications provide opportunities to higher education, degree and professional development programmes within the same or related areas of study, within universities and other institutions. The BTEC qualifications in this specification provide much of the underpinning knowledge and understanding for the National Occupational Standards for the sector. They are supported by the relevant Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) and/or Standards Setting Bodies (SSBs).
