Pre U Global Perspectives at Brentwood County High School
Pre-U Global Perspectives is a course which has been designed to allow you to develop the key skills that you will need in the Sixth Form and beyond. The course is focussed around the development of skills in understanding information, comprehension, research and presentation.
In Year 12 you will be shown how to work with information by studying a range of global issues. The assessment however is entirely content free – in other words you will be assessed on what you can do rather than what you know. There are 3 elements to Pre-U in Year 12. In the first, you will be expected to write a 2,000 word essay on an issue where people hold conflicting views. You choose the issue that you study for the essay from a range of topics. The second element requires you to produce a 10-15 minute presentation based on an issue in one of the articles in a booklet provided by the exam board. Finally, you will complete a source-based exam where you analyse different perspectives on a topical issue. These skills replicate many of the types of assessments that you will face in your AS/A2 courses. Most students finish Pre-U at the end of Year 12 as a short course equivalent to an AS level.
If you choose to do so, you can continue with Pre-U in Year 12, where you are required to complete a 5,000 word Individual Research Report on a topic of your choice. Students who continue with Pre-U complete a long course option, which is equivalent to an A Level.
Students must have at least grade B in the subjects chosen for study
Must have at least grade C in English.
