Music A Level at The Maplesden Noakes School

Course description

Music is constantly evolving, inspiring creativity and expression in a way that no other subject can. A-Level music brings listening, performance and composition to life in new and engaging ways, and links to the world around us. The A-level values all music styles, skills and instruments and broadens students’ minds with the aim of fostering a love of all music

Course content

Component 1: Appraising music

  • Contextual understanding

How it’s assessed

Exam paper with listening and written questions using excerpts of music

This component is 40% of A-Level marks (120 marks)

Component 2: Performance

Music performance

How it’s assessed

Solo and/or ensemble performing as an instrumentalists, or vocalist and/or music production (via technology)

A minimum of ten minutes of performance in total is required.

This component is 35% of A-Level marks (50 marks)

Component 3: Composition

Composition 1: Composition to a brief (25 marks)

Composition 2: Free composition (25 marks)

A minimum of four and a half minutes of music in total is required

Maplesden Noakes is the only school in Maidstone to have an Artsmark Award from the Arts Council of England.

Entry requirements

Grade 4-9 in GCSE Music or BTEC Music Merit or Higher

Future opportunities

The course will allow students to access higher education studying performing arts based subjects.
