Modern Languages (French, German & Spanish) A Level * FEES PAYABLE* at Felsted School

Course description

94% of the world’s population do not
speak English as their mother tongue;
over 60% of British trade is with non-
English speaking countries and, on
average, people who use languages in
their job earn 8% more than those
who don’t.
Life in the 21st century is very much
about global communication, be it for
the purposes of trade or simply for
leisure. Increasingly the world is
becoming smaller as internet, media,
and cheaper travel encourage people to
broaden their horizons.
Knowledge of a modern foreign
language not only improves prospects
for employment, but also allows a
more objective and rounded outlook
on life. A one-dimensional English
take on the world is not an
enlightened one and we cannot hope
to make full sense of our daily lives
unless we consider the international
context and have an understanding of
other cultures.
At Felsted, we like to keep students
aware of what lies beyond the fields
surrounding our village. Proximity to
Stansted Airport, London, Cambridge
and Colchester means ready
possibilities of escape, and we can take
advantage of local flights, theatre,
cinema and universities to open up
linguistic curiosity beyond the
confines of study.

Course content

In each of the three languages, we offer
regular trips abroad and actively
encourage all students to participate in
study days, work experience or private
language courses which we believe
really enhance understanding of
language and culture.
Every year we
celebrate annual events like the 6th
Form Languages Café at the Library or
the 6th Form Languages Corridor
Party, which are part of our Languages
Week each September. We also offer
occasional events in each language,
such as extension clubs, film evenings
and talks.

Entry requirements

An A grade at GCSE would indicate the
appropriateness of the choice of an
AS/A2 language. Where there is any
doubt, subject staff will advise.

Four units involving speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Future opportunities

Modern languages degrees provide skills
that are highly demanded by recruiters in
a wide range of industries all around the
While studying a modern language doesn’t
necessarily mean you’ll end up working
abroad, it will certainly help if you like the
sound of an international career.
