Philosophy and Ethics at Felixstowe Academy

Course description

This course concentrates on the study of the philosophy of religion and ethics. This course encourages students to explore and investigate key ideas learning how to analyse and criticise. The course covers in depth many of the issues studied at GCSE religious studies.

Course content

Topics covered in the philosphy of religion include;

  • Arguments for the existence of God
  • The problem of evil and suffering
  • Miracles
  • Religious experience
  • Beliefs about life after death
  • Religious language

Topics covered in ethics include;

  • The relationship between religion and morality
  • Utilitarianism
  • Stiuation ethics
  • Issues of war and peace
  • Sexual ethics
  • Medical ethics
  • Equality
  • Natural law
  • Justice, law and punishment

Assessment

Assesssment at AS level is by 2 external examinations

  • Foundation paper is 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Investigations paper is 1 hour 15 minutes

Assessment at A2 is also by external examination

  • Development paper is 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Implications paper is 1 hour 15 minutes

As AS/A2 level in philosophy and ethics shows that you can analyse concepts and ideas, this qualification can help you gain access to university and will help you with a grounding in philosophy for those interested in studying the subject in greater depth.
