Biology A-Level LEA at Invictus Sixth Form

Course description

Each year, science and technology are becoming more important in today's global society. Many of the most significant economic, environmental, medical, and social problems in today's world have biological aspects to them. For example, using knowledge about how cells respond to disease to develop drugs and vaccines. The course covers all aspects of biology, which universities favour due to the experience gained in the fundamentals.

Course content

Year 12

Module 1: Practical skills in Biology (taught throughout the course)

Module 2: Foundations in Biology

Module 3: Exchange and Transport

Module 4: Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease

Year 13

Module 5: Communication, Homeostasis

Module 6: Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems

Entry requirements

Specific Entry Requirements

6+ Grade in Mathematics

6+ Grade in the Biology component of GCSE Science

6+ Grade overall in GCSE Science

6 9-5 Grades at GCSE


Assessment (explain how students will be assessed, e.g exam % coursework % etc)

A Level– 100% exam

Paper 1: Biological processes (2hr 15 mins 37%)

Paper 2: Biological Diversity (2hr 15 mins 37%)

Paper 3: Unified Biology (1hr 30 mins 26%)

Each module has a set of Pupil Assessment Groups (PAGs), which are the set practical assessments. The practical endorsement for Biology is separate from the exam on which pupils will achieve a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ for their practical skills


Future opportunities

Higher Education and Career Opportunities Biology is a key subject for a range of careers which include: Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, Forensic science, Physiotherapy, Zoology, Genetics, Marine biology and Veterinary science. Biology is often requested alongside Chemistry, Physics or Maths by universities for their science based degrees.
