Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 at PETROC

Course description

This apprenticeship gives the learner the opportunity to gain the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools alongside paid employment, usually within a School setting. It is designed for Learning support staff with a working role which requires competence in a specialist area and/or across a varied range of responsibilities under the direction of a teacher.

Course content

Learners will complete the following:
Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools
English, Maths and ICT Functional skills/GCSE (unless already achieved the required grades within the last 5 years)

Learners will also develop Professional Learning and Thinking Skills
This course also contains elements of Employee Rights and Responsibilities
Learners on this apprenticeship will be required to contribute to planning, implementing and evaluating learning activities.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade C or above

Learners will usually be required to have C grades in Maths and English at GCSE, however these requirements can be discussed at interview. Learners will need to have regular employment in a suitable setting, which allows them to demonstrate their abilities in roles suitable for Level 3 performance. The employer will need to be willing to support the learner whilst doing the apprenticeship. 
Learners will need an interest in, and commitment to working with children, and be willing to undergo a compulsory Criminal Records Bureau check for suitability of working with children and young people.


    Learners will complete knowledge based coursework at College.
    Learners will also need to prove their competency by producing witness statements, building portfolios and undergoing assessment observations in the workplace.
    Functional skills and GCSE's are assessed by examinations.

    Learners can progress onto a Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies here at Petroc.

    Can I study this apprenticeship if I don't have an employer? To be able to complete an apprenticeship every learner must have an employment setting eg. School; and learners will usually need to find their own placement/employer who is willing to support them. 
    Can I do this apprenticeship in an Early Years setting or pre-school? This apprenticeship is suited to School settings, working with learners over the age of 4. Petroc offers a level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship for the Children and Young People's Workforce and an Advanced level 3 apprenticeship in Children and Young People's Workforce which are both more suited to working with younger learners in a pre-school setting.
    How often will I have to come into Petroc? It is likely that you will be required in College for 1 day a week throughout the usual College term
