General Studies AS/A2 Level at Gillingham School

Course description

The General Studies course covers a great deal of ground and can be shaped by current events. Each year the General Studies Tutors will issue a student CD ROM that has literally hundred of articles relating specifically to the course or that provide background to the issues we will be studying. These will include: Articles on each of the specific topic areas covered, Short biographies of influential policy makers or philosophers, past papers for each module and examiners' mark schemes. All of which will aid students in homework preparation, revision and research.

Course content

At AS, students are introduced to major contemporary issues arranged into five areas of study: Science and Technology, Society and Politics, Arts and Media, Business and Industry, and Beliefs and Values. At AS the topics are arranged under the headings of Conflict and Space. students will also develop transferable thinking skills: the ability to make inferences from data, images and documentary sources, to argue a case and draw reasonable conclusions.

At A2, students further develop understanding about contemporary issues in the five areas of study, under the headings of Power and Change.
