Media Make-Up (Production Arts) at New College Swindon

Course description

BTEC Production Arts (Make-Up) is a highly visual and exciting course which is suitable for all students who have a passion for Fashion, TV, Film and Theatrical Make-up, as well as an interest in Art & Design.  You will be involved with lots of exciting, highly practical projects, live briefs, competitions, shows and lessons throughout your course.

Course content

Media make-up is a rapidly growing profession within the film, industry TV and theatre, media, fashion and photography industries.  There are increasing career opportunities, while new demands challenge the profession to high levels of creativity and expertise.

  • Make- up application skills and creative uses in performance
  • Special effects make up
  • Full body make-up for performers
  • Production arts work shop
  • Production arts planning
  • Hairstyling and dressing for performer
  • Fantasy hair design for performers
  • Period make-up for performing arts
  • Production for theatre performance
  • Make-up using prosthetics
  • Period hair design and wig making for performers
  • Make-up for performers
  • Performing arts business
  • The historical context of performance

All units are assessed in a variety of ways: performance portfolio, sketchbooks, essay-writing, report- writing & presentations and tested assessments.

Entry requirements

You will need the minimum of 4 GCSE’s at grade C or above including English language as well as a GCSE in Art (or a strong portfolio showing keen interest).  You will be invited to attend a portfolio interview with the course leaders.

You will need stamina and a willingness to commit to rehearsals as well as attending live performances and external events. The course is equivalent to 3 A levels over the two year period.  The BTEC Production Arts (Make-up) is recognised by UCAS and students may wish to consider progression onto a HND or Degree course in this area.  Please be aware that if you wish to progress onto a degree course, you MUST have GCSE English and Maths.

Future opportunities

This course could lead you directly into a career within the makeup industry or gives you the qualification to progress onto a HND/degree level course as it is recognised by universities.
