Sport and leisure is an exciting and fast growing industry with a wide range of activities, facilities and job opportunities. Sport and leisure involves all the activities that you choose to do in your free time, whether it is playing sport, watching matches on the television, eating out or visiting a theme park.
Over the year you will be studying eleven vocational units:
- Taking part in sport
- Physical activities for children
- Assisting a leader of sport or leisure activities to plan and deliver an activity
- Working in a team
- Taking part in exercise and fitness activities
- How the body works
- Planning own fitness programme
- Working in sport and active leisure
- Job opportunities in sport and active leisure
- Preparing for work placement
- Learning from work placement
You will be working individually and as part of a group. Lectures are normally classroom based. Sports-based work placements are a feature of this programme.
You will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports activities at the college in your free time.
You should have a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades E-F with English and Maths at minimum grade 2.
The technical units will be assessed through booklets which will be completed during the year. Assessment is 100% coursework.
Coursework tasks are varied. You will learn how to plan and take part in team activities such as sports competitions, investigate leisure provision in the local area, practise delivering customer service and find out about jobs in sport and leisure.
Student materials will cost £30. There may be additional costs for occasional trips.
Many of our students progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in sport, provided they have gained a pass in all the units at level 1 and have demonstrated competency in the functional skills along with a positive tutor reference. Other students go straight into training or take up employment in the leisure and sport industry at a junior level in sports clubs and leisure centres.
