Why Health and Social Care?

The Health and Social Care BTEC provides students with a broad range of knowledge and experience to prepare them for careers within the sector and skills to progress on to relevant University courses. The units of work are designed to develop employment related skills. 

The course aims to give students a detailed understanding of processes within the Health and Social Care sector as well as knowledge of legislation, policies and communication skills.  It helps to prepare students for a range of Health and Social care careers and University courses such as: primary education.nursing. social work, care work, community work, midwifery and more. 



Course content


Extended Certifiacte (Equivalent to 1 A Level)

Unit 1 - Human Lifespan Development (External exam)

Unit 5 - Meeting individual care and support needs (Internal assignment)

Unit 12- Supporting individuals with additional needs (Internal assignment)

Unit 2 - Working in Health and Social Care (External exam)

Diploma (Equivalent to 2 A Levels)

All of the single award units plus:

Unit 4 -Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care (Externally controlled assessment)

Unit 6 - Work Experience in Health and Social Care (Internal assignment with work placement)

Unit 7 - Principles of safe Practice in Health and Social Care (Internal assignment)

Unit 8 - Promoting Public Health (Internal assignment)



Entry requirements


  • Students must achieve a minimum of  4 Grade A* - C plus English Language and Mathematics at grade 4
