Horticulture Level 2 Diploma at West Lancashire College

Course description

The Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture gives you the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised vocational qualification that you may use to enter employment in practical horticulture, landscaping etc. or as an entry onto higher level further education programmes.

The course is designed for young people wanting to start a career in horticulture by developing their practical skills and underpinning knowledge. This will enable you to decide upon the sector of the industry where you wish to carry out further skills development and preparation for work.

Course content

You will study:

  • Introduction to amenity and decorative horticulture
  • Landscape construction
  • Industry and organisations
  • Sports turf
  • Horticultural machinery.
  • Industrial Experience (as part of the programme candidates complete a period of work experience)

Functional Skills will also form an important part of your course with evidence generated from the units.

Learners will undertake a period of work experience appropriate to your course as part of the programme of study.

Maths and English will be part of your programme of study and you will study qualifications in Maths and English, appropriate to your level of ability, alongside your chosen course.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade D or above.

Candidates will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and we will be looking for an appropriate standard of English and maths. We are interested in your enthusiasm and commitment to succeed.


Guided learning and instruction, projects and practical experience.

Unit assignments, performance observation and practical work based assessment.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of Level 2 learners may wish to progress to a BTEC Diploma Level 3 course. Students who successfully complete the course are given support and guidance regarding potential career opportunities and further study opportunities during the course and at our annual careers fair.

Employment at a practical level in Landscape Maintenance, Landscape Construction, Grounds Maintenance, Amenity and Sportsturf Maintenance, Plant production.
