Applied Science Level 2 BTEC Diploma at Mid Cheshire College

Course description

It is a modular programme with nine units studied during the year. The course is delivered largely through laboratory practical work, investigations, lectures and visits.

The nine units include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Forensic. You will learn the skills required to carry out a range of laboratory tasks, complete a number of assignments and attend classes to gain an appropriate level of knowledge in these subjects.

Course content

This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.

The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.

The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 2 will be the development of occupational skills in a selected vocational area and the development of personal, social and employability skills with a view to raising aspirations.

As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.

Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or above or equivalent.


Assessment is through a number of assignments, practical investigations, internal tests and presentations. Regular attendance at lectures is key to success. There are no external examinations although you may have an external test for key skills.

Future opportunities

Progress with a Merit grade to BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science or in another related subject area. Employment as a junior science technician in e.g. quality control or education.
