Design and Technology Textiles A Level at Melksham Oak Community School

Course description

Year 12 Unit 1 Materials Components and Applications

Task 1

Fibres and fabrics including Smart fibres. Characteristics and properties will also be identified.

Yarn and Fabric Construction eg Spinning, Knitting, Felting, Weaving

Students will work independently to form a bound book and will demonstrate understanding by producing practical work to include woven, bonded and knitted fabrics. Revisit this for the AS exam in May

Health & Safety

General textile workshop rules apply although the paperwork is the area for key focus rather than practical work although sewing machines and felting equipment to be used and safety demonstrations will be given

Social Aspects & Industrial Practice.

Task 2

Key Skill Project: Working in a Sweatshop

Students are expected to develop multi cultural and social understanding of the textile industry and to learn about their buying habits in the UK by working in a sweatshop situation.

  • to learn about timekeeping
  • to know the clocking-in system
  • know how to work as a team
  • be able to manage a team as a supervisor
  • to check for quality control
  • be able to produce 6 identical samples

Task 3

Unit 2: Learning through designing and making

Introduction to 50% Coursework Project

Research into 1950’s

History of Fashion – lead up to 50’s & current trends

The following equipment may be used Laser Cutter, Plotter Cutter, Drawing tablets and other CAD/CAD programs Students are expected to test areas of the design using a range of methods and different materials and to start making the product.

Appropriate textile materials will be researched and chosen. Students will learn how to draft a basic pattern for their product . A Portfolio will be completed:

Year 13 Unit 3: Design and manufacture Designers: Private Study Project

Research into the top 3 designers & one other from the list below: You will need to present the information on the last lesson in week 6. It should be a powerpoint presentation.

Techniques for construction and decoration

  • Gathers, pleats, smocking,shearing
  • Ethnic techniques eg tye/dye, batik, shisha, macramé
  • Sustainability eg patchwork, applique
  • Industrial practices, one-off, batch, mass JIT, subassembly
  • CAM laser cutterfor cut work, buttons
  • Dying Industrial methods (Vat, discharge & resist)Stages which dye is applied (fibre, yarn, fabric, finished product)
Unit 4: Design and Making Practice

This is a design and make task which is the student’s own project and a portfolio must be produced to support the product. This task must show creativity, originality, commercial appeal
