Agriculture (Level 3 - Advanced Apprenticeship) at Newton Rigg College
Work-based learning and assessment at your place of work with some college based study. Learners must be in a paid work placement to commence an apprenticeship programme. The work-based route involves practising and demonstrating a range of practical and theory skills and includes completing a Work-Based Diploma at Level 2 or 3 plus Functional Skills at an appropriate level.
Learners would usually enter at the Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) stage before progressing to the Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3). Those employed in the industry and have an increased level of responsibility may also be considered for the Advanced Apprenticeship or Higher Apprenticeship.
• Deliver basic treatments for livestock • Establish and monitor conditions of livestock • Routine animal husbandry • Health and wellbeing of livestock • Select and prepare animals for breeding • Transportation of animals • Maintain information and records in the workplace • English and maths provision where applicable
As part of your study programme the opportunity exists to take additional specialist qualifications such as Tractor Driving, Fork Lift Truck Driving and Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines, but charges may apply.
Usually a Level 2 work-based qualification (Intermediate Apprenticeship) or considerable work experience, plus a suitable work placement

Higher Education qualifications such as
Foundation Degrees in Agriculture and Land Management or
Countryside Management and , if you’re successful, then on to
a ‘top up’ BSc Hons degree.
Many learners remain with their employer in roles
such as operatives or supervisors. The qualification leads to
‘Craftsman’ Grade 4 within the Agricultural Wages Act current
pay structure. With further study as shown above you could
move into management.
