Travel & Tourism BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Lincoln Castle Academy

Course description

You may choose this option if you have enjoyed studying BTEC subjects in Years 10 and 11 and know that you are more successful at coursework projects than examinations. You would also choose Travel and Tourism if you have studied the subject in Years 10 and 11 or if you have studied GCSE Geography. You may also consider this subject if you have career aspirations in this area. It may be that you have the desire to know more about tourism locations both local, national and global. Geographical skills, locating popular tourist destinations on a map, using different resources to plan holidays, role play different customer service situations, in-depth knowledge of different countries and cultures, financial and mathematical skills are required for some pieces of coursework, as is working to a budget. English, Business Studies and Geography in particular, but it is a versatile course that can be adapted to meet the needs and interests of different students.

Entry requirements

English grade ‘C’ is preferred, although students will be considered on their individual merits. Students do need to have a grade profile at Level 2 across at least four subjects. You do not have to have studied BTEC First Travel in Years 10 & 11 to study BTEC Level 3 Travel and Tourism. What is essential is a high degree of motivation to succeed and the ability to manage your own time well and work independently on research tasks. There are strict deadlines set within this course and these must be met.

Future opportunities

The service industry is the biggest employer in the UK. We are preparing students to either continue this or similar subjects at University or to work in the industry after completing the course. Careers in this area can be working for airlines, hotel management, working at visitor attractions, travel agents, working for the local council in their tourism department and some students take this subject as they know it will enhance their employability potential due to the range of topics and skills taught.
