Course description

Children’s Play, Learning and Development is about…

This is a professional qualification that offers opportunities for both professional and academic development. Theoretical studies and professional skill development blend with 8 mandatory days spent gaining valuable practical experience in a range of placements. This course is the equivalent of 1 A Level.

 

There are 11 mandatory units:

  • Unit 1 – Children’s Development. This is assessed externally through a 90 minute exam.

  • Unit 2-Development of Children’s Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills. This is assessed externally through assignment task.

  • Unit 3- Play and Learning. This is assessed internally through assignment tasks.

  • Unit 4-Enquiries into Current Research in Early Years Practice. This is assessed externally through a research task.

  • Unit 5- Keeping Children Safe. This is assessed internally through assignment tasks.

  • Unit 6-Children’s Physical Development, Care and Health Needs. This is assessed internally through assignment tasks.

  • Unit 7- Children’s Personal, Social and Emotional Development. This is assessed internally through assignment tasks.

  • Unit 8-Working with Parents and Others in early Years. This is assessed internally through assignment tasks.

  • Unit 9- Observation, Assessment and Planning. This is assessed internally through assignment tasks.

  • Unit 10-Reflective Practice. This is assessed internally through assignment tasks.

  • Unit 11-The Early Years Foundation Stage. This is assessed internally through assignment tasks.

     

There are 4 additional option units- Units are chosen by teachers, to provide the best career development opportunities.

Course content

Over the two years, you will gain a sound knowledge of child development from 0-8 years, gaining an understanding of safeguarding, equality, planning for the unique child and the principles for implementing duty of care in children’s and young people’s care and educational settings. The course will develop your independent research skills using our extensive research library and your ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to an audience of all ages. The course is demanding, working through the various units of study, whilst pleasurable. It will form the foundations of the journey to become an excellent practitioner.

Entry requirements

Students must have a grade 5 in Mathematics and English Language.

Future opportunities

Childern's play is relevant for university study in the fields of Primary School Teaching; Early Years and Youth Studies; Social Work; Nursing and many other degree level courses. It is accepted as an entry qualification in many universities.

 

The diploma is also a professional qualification, which allows you to work at a professional level in a number of roles. These include: Room Leader in an early years setting; Level 3 Learning Support or Teaching Assistant; Qualified Family Support Worker, to name a few.
