Course description

Can you imagine a world without sport? No competition in schools, no World Championships, no TV sport, no hooligans, no role models! Then there’s your leisure time – skiing, football in the park, jogging, golf…….

Since the late 1990’s the sport and active leisure sector has outperformed the rest of the UK economy and researchers predict this will continue to be the case for years to come, long after the legacy of the 2012 Olympics. Within each unit you will analyse a wide variety of sport activities, developing an understanding of the current issues for performers, players, coaches and officials.

Course content

BTEC Certificate in Sport - gives you a basic grounding in understanding and knowledge of the sport and active leisure sector. This is the equivalent of one AS level and is studied in one year.

BTEC Diploma in Sport - the equivalent of two A levels and is a two year programme. BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport - the equivalent of three A levels and is a two year programme.

The BTEC Diploma and Extended Diploma units provide much of the underpinning knowledge required for industry-recognised qualifications such as the level 3 NVQ in Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise enabling you to gain membership of the Register of Exercise Professionals.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above. Be prepared to communicate with a wide range of people. You need to take a regular active role in sport activities as a player, official or coach.

Assessment

You will write reports, present data, through tasks, projects and a range of activities including workplace assessment, role play and presentations.

Future opportunities

Enter the sport sector to build a career in sport, within one of its occupational areas - exercise and fitness, coaching and leadership, sports development and the outdoors. You could also progress to a higher education qualification in a specific sport-related area.
