BTEC Extended Diploma Health and Social Care at Castleford Academy
This course is an engaging and challenging course. It is designed to expose you to the skills and knowledge required by health and social care professionals in a variety of jobs.
This course requires you to have an interest in the health and social care, an ability to communicate effectively, an ability to organise yourself and to meet regular deadlines following independent work.
This course will enable you to develop your self confidence and communication skills through role plays, group work and presentations as well as transferrable skills such as time management, organisation which are useful areas in employment.
The Extended Diploma is a 2 year full time course taught in 12 lessons plus timetabled weekly work experience. It consists of 17 units covering range of areas including
- Developing effective communication in Health and Social Care
- Development through the life stages
- Anatomy and physiology ( how the body works)
- Nutrition for Health and Social Care
- Psychology and sociology within Health and Social Care
- 100 hours of compulsory work experience
Each of these units will give you points accepted in University applications
5 GCSE grade A*- C. English and Maths is preferred but re-sit opportunities will be given for pupils who do no achieve them.
The course is 100% coursework so you need to
- be highly organised
- have very good attendance and punctuality in order to succeed
Students wil complete the Extended Diploma over 2 years which is equivalent to 3 A Levels and is recognised by employers and universities.The extended diploma consists of 18 units and is assessed through coursework.Assements with be through a vareity of methods, including written assignments, case studies, along with projects, performance observation and time-constrained assessments.
The work is assessed by both your teachers and an external moderator.
Students who undertake the BTEC extended Diploma have access to a wide range of careers and University opportunities such as
- social work
- primary teaching
- child care
- occupational therapy
- health visitor
Many students may choose to use the qualification to go straight into employment, rather than going into Higher Education; the skills developed on this course are in great demand by employers in a wide range of sectors.
