Design and Technology (Product Design) A Level at Thurston Community College

Course description

A-level Product Design is a creative and thought provoking qualification giving you the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and confidence to succeed in a number of careers, especially those in the creative industries. You will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design and technology, whilst enjoying opportunities to put your learning into practice by producing products of your choice. You will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers.

Units covered are technical principles of design, designing and making skills and additional specialist knowledge.

Entry requirements

Entry: GCSE Grade C in Design Technology Resistant Materials, Product Design and Systems & Control.

If you have not studied a Design Technology subject at GCSE then you will require a grade B in either GCSE Physics or Maths. GCSE Art and Design will also be considered, but you will be required to present a portfolio of work and attend a departmental interview.


Design and make task, 100 marks, worth 50%
Paper 1: 2 hour exam, worth 25% on technical principles and designing and making principles.

Paper 2: 2 hour exam, worth 25% on specialist knowledge, technical designing and making principles.

This course gives you a fantastic grounding to move into the world of design. Giving you opportunities to focus on specialising in Product design, Architecture, Engineering, and related Business and Management careers.
