Food Technology at Sprowston Community High School

Course description

Food Technology is diverse. Food Technology uses food science to create, preserve, process, package and distribute food products. The packaged food we eat today can use ingredients from all over the world, be assembled in a factory at the other side of the country and may then be delivered frozen to your local supermarket. It’s exciting. It’s ‘hands on’. You get to cook! You get to taste test! You will create food products that look good, taste great and meet the demands of real life target groups and markets. Food technology is a growth industry. For example, we currently need 800 trained Food Technology teachers.


THE COURSE You will gain a deep understanding of the link between design, materials and food manufacture. This makes the course a good foundation for a higher education course or a useful qualification in its own right. There is a mix of classroom learning and practical learning. At AS you study materials, the food industry and food quality. Practical work involves investigating, designing and making food products. At A2 you study a range of basic foods, nutrition and product development. Practical work is based around the development of a commercial product with a link to a client group: a real life situation.


SKILLS Food Technology helps to develop both sides of your brain: the creative and analytical. You will analyse and investigate; create new food products; develop your own ideas; use a range of ICT skills; understand industry, manufacturing and marketing; learn to manage and organise; develop documentary skills. All are key skills for life. Use them at home, at work, at university

Entry requirements

To study A Level courses you will need to have achieved at least 5 GCSE Grades A*-C in full courses including either English or Maths. C grade or higher in a related Design and Technology subject.
