Basic Construction Skills Diploma at Furness College
Learn the practical skills, technical knowledge, Health & Safety training and current legislation and practices that the industry demands in one of the following: Painting & Decorating, Brickwork, Carpentry & Joinery, Plastering or Domestic Electrical. For two years running two of our apprentices have reached the national UK Skills finals in Carpentry & Joinery which has involved them in competition against other construction students from FE colleges across the UK.
Units studied include an introduction, development and expansion to the following skills: site carpentry, leveling, paint finishing, brickwork, bench joinery, preparation, papering, personal development and employability. Functional Skills form part of this
qualification and will be assessed at the relevant levels.
Every full-time course will include a real experience of work.
Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification only a willingness to learn. You will be required to attend an interview.
You will be assessed continually throughout the year on practical work by observation and building a portfolio of evidence and by synoptic assessment at the end of the year.
Theory work is assessed in both Construction and Functional Skills by the use of multiple-choice exams throughout the year and at the end of the year. You will also undertake a core assignment which is assessed throughout the year.
You will need boots, overalls, stationery and drawing equipment.
Students can progress on to the Construction Crafts Diploma Programme Level 1. Progression is based on aptitude and a successful interview.
