Course description

GENERAL AIMS: To study an historical period in depth

and to build skills of source analysis and essay writing.

COURSE OUTLINE:

AS: Communism and Democracy in the 20th century and

the British Empire Challenged Russian revolution from the

last Tsar to the death of Lenin and Stalin’s Russia until the

end of World War Two; The relationship between Ireland

and England in the late 19th and early 20th century.

A2: Protest, Crisis and Rebellion in England

1536-1558 The Tudors from Henry VIII to Elizabeth

I and a coursework unit on Ireland including

key events such as the potato famine.

NATURE OF STUDY: Class discussion of key events

and debates over controversial issues; Group tasks such

as presentations and speeches which are supported

by research at home; Some analysis of sources and

preparation for exams by writing essays will also take place.

Entry requirements

Sixth Form Entry

Year 12

A Levels

5 A*-C at GCSE, including a C in English + Mathematics,

with a B grade in the chosen subject areas for A Level.

BTEC Level 3

4 A*-C, preferably including a C in English + Mathematics.

BTEC Level 2

2 D grades.

Year 13

Each student’s work is reviewed at the end of

Year 12 and progress into Year 13 is dependent on

satisfactory performance in the examinations.
