Horticulture Level 1 at Lancaster and Morecambe College

Course description

This practical course is an introduction to horticulture in the land-based industries where you will get the right skills to go on to the Level 2 in Horticulture or into employment.

Course content

You will study the following: • Communicating in a practical environment • Developing practical skills and techniques • Health and safety in a practical environment • Customer service skills • Use of materials in a practical activity • Use tools and equipment for a practical activity

All students aged 16 -19 are required to study Functional Skills English and maths qualifications or GCSE mathematics and English if not already awarded a grade A*-C in these subjects. If you have a grade D at GCSE you will study maths and/or English GCSE. Students with a grade lower than D will work towards GCSE through the study of maths and English Functional Skills. Students aged 19+ are strongly encouraged to take relevant maths and English qualifications to support progression into further or higher education, training or employment. All LMC students will receive tutorial support. 

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade A*-D including English or maths OR a Level 1 related qualification. Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager. 

Assessment

This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including internal assignment tasks, a portfolio and one online multiple choice test. N.B. Assessments are based on the requirements of the awarding body and are subject to change. 

Financial information

You will be required to pay £55.00 for visit costs. You will also need a pair of steel toe capped boots, a pair of waterproof over trousers and jacket.

Future opportunities

You can progress on to the Level 2 in Horticulture, a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Horticulture or into employment.

Further information

You will be expected to undertake occasional home study on this course.

On completion of this course you will receive AIM Awards Level 1 Certificate in Developing Skills for Employment (Horticulture) and Functional Skills.
