Course description

You will learn all about democracy and how modern democracies function. This includes the various voting systems and why people vote the way they do, political parties and pressure groups. It explores how democracy is undermined by elitism and the lack of representation of women and ethnic minorities.

Course content

You will learn all about democracy and how modern democracies function.  This includes the various voting systems and why people vote the way they do, political parties and pressure groups.  It explores how democracy is undermined by elitism and the lack of representation of women and ethnic minorities.

Entry requirements

You will need to have at least 5A* - C grades at GCSE, preferably with a Level Two qualification in a Social Science, although this is not absolutely essential.  An ability to construct discursive essays and be analytical, evaluative and critical is highly desirable.

Assessment

There are two written papers; one is taken in January of Year 12 and one in May.

The January module is 1.5 hours long and is called People, Politics and Participation.

The May module is 1.5 hours long and is called Governing Modern Britain.

The two modules are aggregated and a total mark is awarded for them. Grading is from E - A*. The pass mark is 40% for an E and 90% for an A* grade.

Future opportunities

Government & Politics can lead to a wide range of higher and further education courses; especially in Politics, Law and the Social Sciences. It can also lead to training opportunities and to employment in various private and local government outlets. There are many employment opportunities after graduating, particularly in the legal profession, the civil service, the social services and in teaching as a career.
