Textiles at St Bede's Catholic Comprehensive School and Sixth Form College, Lanchester

Course description

AS Level – One Year
 
Students are required to complete a portfolio of work displaying a wide variety of practical and design skills.
 
The portfolio can consist of 2 or more topics chosen mainly by the students with teacher guidance. Topics that have been included before are:
 
  • Items that use texture to good effect
  • Recycling in modern day clothing
  • Steam punk fashion
  • Chanel jackets to die for.
Along with the practical outcomes all students must produce a portfolio supporting their design decisions.
 
A 2 hour written paper consisting of 3 sections:
  • Section 1 is short questions mainly on fibres and fabrics
  • Section 2 based on design aspects and product analysis
  • Section 3 longer questions covering the other topics
A Level – Two Years
Students identify a need in the market and produce a folder and practical work based on that topic. It is expected that they produce a wider range of skills, using computerised technology and technical knowledge to achieve exciting, innovative results.
 
Topics have included:
  • African themed jumpsuits
  • Evening dresses based on nature
  • Monet inspired suits
Along with the practical outcomes all students must produce a portfolio supporting their design decisions.
A 2 hour written paper, selecting 3 essay questions from a possible 6, based on the full course content

Entry requirements

Students should produce a portfolio of work highlighting design skills and an interest in designers. It is preferable but not essential that students have completed GCSE Design Technology or Art before starting this course.
