Product Design at Trinity Catholic College

Course description

Product design is the process of creating a new product to be sold by a business or enterprise to its customers. It is concerned with the efficient and effective generation and development of ideas through a process that leads to new products.

The process is quite involved and includes: research, ergonomics, styling, brand consideration, sizing, engineering, material consideration, and design for manufacture to name just some parts of the process. The designers role is to combine art, science and technology to create tangible three-dimensional goods. This evolving role has been supported by digital tools that allow designers tocommunicate, visualize and analyse ideas in a way that would have taken greater manpower in the past.

The AS course is designed to offer candidates the opportunity to study, propose and realise prototype solutions closely linked to the real world of product manufacture in a range of material areas.
