Early Years (Childcare) Apprenticeship Advanced Level 3 at Southampton City College

Course description

This apprenticeship is suitable for you if you want to start a career or develop your existing skills in working with children and young people.


Suitable job roles

For those who work on their own initiative, planning and organising their own work and/or supervising others such as

  • Nursery Nurse
  • Playgroup Leader
  • Senior Play Worker
  • Child Minder working on their own at home

Course content

Early Years apprenticeships are for people who work with children aged from birth to 16 years (and their families) in settings or services whose main purpose is children’s care, learning and development, e.g. child minder’s own home, crèches, community based services, day care, extended schools, hospitals, playgroups, pre-schools, primary care, schools and Sure Start programmes.

Entry requirements

A full assessment will take place to ensure you have the skills to complete the qualification. As this is an advanced apprenticeship, all applicants will require GCSEs at grade A*-C in English and maths (or equivalent), or can demonstrate through the assessment process that they will be able to achieve this. By completing a workplace audit the Apprenticeship Coordinator will be able to establish whether you are covering the right level of tasks in the workplace to support the criteria necessary for the on-site evidence.

All applicants will undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.


As an apprentice you can expect to be doing work based learning with an employer and to be paid a wage. The apprenticeship will include a CACHE certificate/diploma combined qualification, functional skills/GCSE, and an Employment qualification
