Course content


Unit 1:

Investigating Business

In this unit you will examine how an organisation structures its business and its aims and objectives in satisfying customer needs. You will investigate how a local organisation uses the marketing mix, enterprise skills, analysis of the external economic environment and the use of teams to compete successfully in today's challenging business environment.

Unit 2:

People in business

You will study how businesses ensure that they recruit suitable employees and meet employment law in today's business environment. You will investigate how a local organisation identifies qualities needed for jobs and finds the right people to fill them. The course will involve you taking part in a simulated recruitment process.

Unit 3:

Financial Planning and monitoring

You will learn to calculate costs, revenues, profits and create a variety of business accounts. You will carry out analysis, and make judgements on the financial health of an organisation.


Unit 8:

Business Planning

You will produce a structured business plan for a new product or service. The plan will involve the creation of accounts, a marketing plan, and an operations plan. You will be able to demonstrate business skills learnt in previous units as well as team work, enterprise and presentation skills.

Unit 11:

The Marketing Environment

You will learn to analyse a business environment in more depth and assess appropriate stratagem such as diversification, penetration, and product development using tools such as the Boston and Ansoff Matrices.

Unit 12:

Managing People

You will examine how different management styles impact upon the way a business operates and the staff who work in it. You will learn to recognise that different management styles and techniques are needed in different situations and you will learn how to identify the management style which is appropriate.


The course is assessed through examination and coursework portfolio. Units 1, 2 and 8 are coursework units and Units 3, 11 and 12 are externally tested.

Future opportunities

Completion of the course will provide students with the background to take business further at university level as well as prepare them for employment in a wide range of occupations. Money makes the world go round! No matter what occupation, we all need some business awareness. Examples include Marketing Manager, Designer and Entrepreneur.
